Here Comes The Baby !

"Hooray ! My Baby is Here ! Oops but there are a long list of things to do" ( that's right, I mean lots of things to do )
  • choose the best name for your baby
  • fill up the birth registration form and submit to the IC dept.
  • get your baby's birth certificate and MyKid card
  • inform your confinement lady that you have given birth or
  • check in to the confinement centre which you have placed deposit with
  • if you opt for a confinement centre, then you will be more relaxed and less worried because everything has been prepared for and you just need to bring your baby and your personal belongings (clothes, sarong, slippers, skincare, slimming gel, toiletries, sanitary pad, disposable panties).
  • if you opt to stay at home and engage a confinement lady, then you have to remind your husband to buy all the necessary groceries such as meat, vegetable, condiments, lots of ginger, lemongrass, cooking oil, sufficient gas for cooking, etc.....
  • For baby : baby clothes, nappies, mittens and socks, feeding bottles, toiletries, bath tub, waterproof mattress liner, baby cot with beddings, night light
  • For mother : breast pump, breast pad, sanitary pads, disposable panties, nursing bra, lanolin cream.

Labour Pain

Most mothers wish to go through at least once natural childbirth as they do not want to miss the lifetime experience. Turning down pain relief drugs certainly is a better choice as all drugs have side effects on the mother and baby. Some tips on pain relieving during labour pain :
  • massage by your husband
  • relaxation techniques you learn in prenatal class
  • breathing exercise
  • concentration to "push"

Labour really hurts, but the good news is : if you are prepared and acquire some knowledge, trust me, you'll feel the greatest satisfaction becoming the most wonderful mother in the world when you hear your little one crying out loud for the first time.

Anyhow, of course there are some options for you to choose if you really, really can not "tahan" the pain. There are 3 options so far :

  • Gas or entonox : a cylinder attached to a tube and mouthpiece/mask releases nitrous oxide. You must breathe it in 30 seconds before the pain sets in. The negative is you may feel nauseous after inhaling.
  • Pethidine : After injection, it takes up to 20 minutes to kick in, but lasts between 2 to 4 hours. The negative is if given to close to delivery, it may affect baby's breathing at birth.
  • Epidural : an anaesthetic injects into the side of the spinal cord to numb your body from the lower back downwards. The negative is backache, nausea and vomiting, headache

The Benefits of Prenatal Yoga

Why prenatal yoga is good for you

  • helps you relax your body and control your thoughts. It stimulates your immune system and promotes good physical and mental health for you and your baby

  • reduces aches and pains, discomfort, fatigue, swelling and inflammation around the joints. It also improves blood circulation and increases energy, so you can cope beteer with labour and birth.
